Free Let's Encrypt SSL vs. Paid SSL: Key Differences
What Let's Encrypt Provides
Let's Encrypt is a widely used certificate authority that issues free Domain Validation certificates, automated entirely through software rather than requiring manual ordering steps. If you have not yet read Domain Validation (DV) SSL: Fast Setup Guide, it covers the validation level Let's Encrypt certificates fall under.
The Core Encryption Is the Same
It is worth being clear about something often misunderstood: the actual encryption strength provided by a free Let's Encrypt certificate is not weaker than a paid certificate at the same validation level. Both encrypt the connection to an equivalent technical standard. The differences between free and paid options lie elsewhere.
Where Paid Certificates Differ
Paid certificates are available at higher validation levels, specifically Organization Validation and Extended Validation, which Let's Encrypt does not offer, since its automated issuance process is not designed to verify business identity. See Organization Validation (OV) SSL: Requirements and Setup if your business needs this level of verified identity.
Paid certificates also typically include warranty coverage, a financial guarantee from the certificate authority in the rare event of a certificate related security failure, which free certificates generally do not include. Additionally, paid certificate providers often include dedicated customer support for certificate related issues, compared to the more community driven support model around free automated certificates.
Renewal Frequency
Let's Encrypt certificates are issued with a shorter validity period than most paid certificates, requiring more frequent renewal. In practice, this is typically handled through automated renewal software running on your server, meaning the shorter validity period does not usually translate into more manual work, provided automation is properly configured. See SSL Certificate Renewal: Avoiding Expiration Downtime for more on managing this process.
Which One Should You Choose
If your website only needs basic domain validated encryption, without a specific need to display verified business identity, a free Let's Encrypt certificate provides equivalent core protection at no cost, provided automated renewal is properly configured. If your business needs verified organizational identity, warranty coverage, or dedicated support specifically for certificate issues, a paid certificate is the appropriate choice.
