Plesk Basics: First Login Walkthrough
Before You Log In
If you have not yet read cPanel vs. Plesk: Which Control Panel Is Right for You?, it explains why your hosting plan uses Plesk specifically, most commonly because it runs on Windows Server or because Plesk was the chosen panel for that plan.
Your welcome email includes your Plesk login URL, your username, and your initial password. Keep this email accessible until you have successfully logged in and changed your password.
Logging In for the First Time
Enter the login URL from your welcome email into your browser. Enter your username and password exactly as provided, since these fields are typically case sensitive. Once logged in, change your password immediately under the account settings area, usually accessible from your profile icon or a dedicated Security section.
Understanding the Layout
Plesk organizes its features around a sidebar navigation menu, generally including sections such as Websites and Domains, Mail, Databases, and Files. This differs from cPanel's icon grid layout, but covers largely the same categories of tasks.
Where to Go for Common Tasks
For uploading or managing your website files, look under Files in the sidebar. For setting up a database, look under Databases. For creating email accounts tied to your domain, look under Mail. Many of the underlying concepts covered in our cPanel guides, such as Creating and Managing MySQL Databases in cPanel, apply conceptually to Plesk as well, even though the exact screens look different.
Checking Your Account Resources
Plesk typically displays a resource usage summary on its main dashboard, showing disk space, bandwidth, and other account limits. Reviewing this periodically helps you notice if you are approaching your plan's limits before it becomes a practical problem.
Installing Applications
Plesk includes an Applications section where you can install WordPress and other common platforms with a guided setup process, similar in concept to cPanel's Softaculous or Installatron tools. See Installing WordPress via Softaculous/Installatron for a closer look at this process.
Getting Comfortable
Plesk's sidebar structure remains consistent across most of its features, so once you know which section a task belongs to, navigating the rest becomes more intuitive. If you get stuck on a specific task, our support team can help point you to the right section.
