Extended Validation (EV) SSL: The Green Bar Explained
What Extended Validation Confirms
Extended Validation, commonly referred to as EV SSL, represents the highest level of identity verification available for an SSL certificate. It confirms domain control, verified business registration, and additional checks into the legal, physical, and operational existence of the organization requesting the certificate.
If you have not yet read Organization Validation (OV) SSL: Requirements and Setup, it covers the verification level directly below EV.
About the Historical Green Bar
EV certificates were historically associated with a distinctive green address bar displaying the verified company name directly in the browser, making verification immediately visible to visitors without needing to click into certificate details. Most modern browsers have since changed how they display this information, generally no longer showing the distinctive green bar treatment, though the underlying verification process and its rigor remain unchanged.
Why the Verification Process Is So Thorough
EV verification involves confirming your organization's legal existence through official registration records, verifying your physical business address and operational status, confirming you have the legal right to use the specific domain, and in many cases a direct verification call to your organization through officially listed contact information. This significantly more thorough process is what distinguishes EV from OV certificates.
How Long the Process Takes
Given the depth of verification involved, EV certificate issuance typically takes longer than either DV or OV, often extending to a week or more depending on how quickly required documentation can be provided and verified. Businesses on a tight timeline should factor this into their planning well in advance.
Who Should Consider EV
EV SSL is most commonly chosen by financial institutions, ecommerce platforms handling significant transaction volume, and other businesses where the highest available level of verified trust is a priority, regardless of whether the visible browser indicator has changed over time. The underlying value of demonstrably verified organizational legitimacy remains relevant even without the historical visual treatment.
Is EV Worth It for Your Business
Given that the most visible historical benefit, the green address bar, is no longer displayed the same way across most browsers, businesses should weigh EV's higher cost and longer verification timeline against whether OV verification already meets their actual needs. For most businesses outside specifically high trust industries, OV provides meaningful verified identity without the extended EV timeline.
Installing Your Certificate
Once issued, EV certificate installation follows the same general process as other certificate types. See Generating a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) and Installing an SSL Certificate on cPanel/Plesk for the full walkthrough.
